Friday, July 9,2010..A hot and humid day July 9, 2010

Hi,

It has been awhile, but I assure you I’ve been busy. I guess it  all started after the last hospitalization in May at Duke. I received news from my brother ( the one that came out and stayed with me after my transplant in 07), that he had gone for his routine colonoscopy and they had found pre-cancerous polyps in the transverse colon and cancerous polyps in the sigmoid colon. My God, I was horrified. He was supportive and concerned about me being upset. This man had just told me about his problems and he was concerned about how I would take the news. I will do anything for this man. He is my life-line.

Of course, he has had to undergo numerous testing and scans. The doctors felt that the surgery would do the trick and no further treatment would be needed. He had surgery and they removed about a foot of the colon and did some lymph-node biopsies. Bad news that the biopsies were cancerous., he would need chemo. He had his port put in and today was to be his first day of chemo. I can’t explain the chemo treatment yet. It involves some treatment at the doctors office and then the next 2 days IV treatment at home. This is to happen every other week for 6 months. I don’t know the names of the chemo yet either. The weekend I’ll find out what is going on.

Please keep my brother in your prayers or send good vibs..whatever you can. I just wish I could do something for him or take the chemo.

I had planned on my going out to see him for vacation this year since he has been coming out here for the past several years. Zeroed in on dates and then this has happened and I have had another trip to the hospital. Went Sunday, June 27th to the local ER in the early am and they could find nothing wrong with me. By 6pm, my friend had called 911 and we were on the way to Duke again. Admitted with a partial small bowel obstruction and they found I had a small hernia in the belly button area. I checked out early Wednesday evening. I just return to work this Wednesday.

My INR level is way low for me. I started on the lovenox shots again in the hospital. So far the level hasn’t moved. I take 60mcg in the am and pm and the coumadin levels are 1mg and 2mg every other day. Plus I take a baby aspirin daily as I had a cardiac problem while I was in the hospital. My heart rate was 160. They couldn’t get it to slow down. They wanted to stop the heart and then restart it. I said no way! Try something else. My doctor flooded me with fluids and after awhile it came back down. She said I was so dehydrated that the heart speed up to try and circulate what liquids I had. Once she could get the fluids in and circulating, the heart started to slow down.

Hope you all had a great holiday weekend. I’ll update again soon. Take care.
